The Melk Climate Quarter is an innovative transformation project aimed at redesigning an existing inner-city neighborhood to improve its climate resilience. Building on a participatory process that began in 2014, the Lower Austrian municipality of Melk, planning and research partners, local businesses, and the population are working together on the future of the neighborhood around Abbe Stadler-Gasse.
The project aims to develop a climate boulevard, which will be a low-traffic zone. One of the key measures is the conversion of a car park and road into an urban climate forest with permeable surfaces, native plant species and dense shade. This new green space will improve the urban climate, boost biodiversity and support rainwater management. It will also provide a place for people to meet and spend time together, fostering cooperation within the neighborhood.
Thereby, the project incorporates nature-based solutions, circular soil and urban mining, sustainable mobility and energy-efficient systems into a comprehensive concept for the district. Based on a master plan, traffic studies and initial construction projects, a resource-efficient, liveable district is being created on approximately 1.7 hectares.
The project is linked to the funding of the “ImpaQT” project, which is part of the EU’s LIFE environment and climate program. Melk is thus taking on a pioneering role in climate-adapted neighborhood development.

Das Klimaquartier Melk ist ein innovatives Transformationsprojekt zur klimaresilienten Weiterentwicklung eines innerstädtischen Bestandsquartiers. Aufbauend auf einem Beteiligungsprozess, der bereits 2014 begann, arbeiten die niederösterreichische Stadtgemeinde Melk, Planungs- und Forschungspartner, lokale Betriebe sowie die Bevölkerung gemeinsam an der Zukunft des Quartiers rund um die Abbe Stadler-Gasse.
Zentrales Element ist die Entwicklung eines Klimaboulevards als verkehrsberuhigter Stadtraum. Eine zentrale Maßnahme ist die Umgestaltung eines Parkplatzes und Straßenraums zu einem urbanen Klimawald mit versickerungsfähigen Belägen, heimischen Pflanzenarten und dichter Beschattung. Der neue Grünraum verbessert das Stadtklima, fördert die Artenvielfalt und unterstützt das Regenwassermanagement. Zudem dient er als Begegnungsort für die Nachbarschaft sowie als Co-Kreationsort.
Das Projekt verbindet naturbasierte Lösungen, Circular Soil und Urban Mining, nachhaltige Mobilität sowie energieeffiziente Systeme zu einem ganzheitlichen Quartierskonzept. Auf Basis eines Masterplans, von Verkehrsuntersuchungen und ersten Bauvorhaben entsteht auf rund 1.7 Hektar ein ressourcenschonender und lebenswerter Stadtteil. Das Projekt steht in Verbindung mit der Förderung des Projekts „ImpaQT“, welches Teil des EU Umwelt- und Klimaprogramms LIFE ist. Damit übernimmt Melk damit eine Vorreiterrolle in der klimaangepassten Quartiersentwicklung.
