As part of the closed co-creation competition in Alt-Hohenschönhausen, Superwien has developed a sustainable urban quarter that preserves and further develops existing structures. This competition entry came in second place. The guiding principle of “Kiez am Gleis” (neighborhood by the tracks) has given way to an urban fabric that closely intertwines living, working, culture, and community for one of Berlins neighbourhoods. Bahnhofsstraße will become the backbone of the district as a green, urban avenue, connecting mobility, public spaces, and active ground floor zones.

Distinctive existing halls, tracks, and infrastructure will be integrated according to the reuse principle and made flexible for use. Complemented by a variety of housing types, commercial spaces, and neighborhood squares, a small-scale, lively cityscape will be created. The open space concept focuses on climate-active solutions such as the sponge city principle, climate-friendly planting, and robust green spaces to improve the microclimate.

A central contact zone between residential and commercial areas promotes encounters, short distances, and mixed use. Mobility hubs, a largely car-free interior area, and a dense network of footpaths and cycle paths strengthen sustainable mobility. With balanced density, modular structures, and resource-efficient construction, the concept combines ecological responsibility with economic viability and gives Alt-Hohenschönhausen a forward-looking impetus.

Im Werkstattverfahren Alt-Hohenschönhausen, einem Berliner Stadtteil, entwickelt Superwien ein zukunftsfähiges Stadtquartier, das Bestandsstrukturen bewahrt und weiterentwickelt. Dieser Wettbewerbsbeitrag erreichte den zweiten Platz. Unter dem Leitmotiv „Kiez am Gleis“ entsteht ein urbanes Gefüge mit enger Verzahnung von Wohnen, Arbeiten, Kultur und Gemeinschaft. Die Bahnhofsstraße wird als grüne, urbane Allee zum Rückgrat des Quartiers und verbindet Mobilität, öffentliche Räume und aktive Erdgeschosszonen.

Prägende Bestandshallen, Gleise und Infrastrukturen werden nach dem Reuse-Prinzip integriert und flexibel nutzbar gemacht. Ergänzt durch vielfältige Wohnformen, Gewerbeflächen und Nachbarschaftsplätze entsteht ein kleinteiliges, lebendiges Stadtbild. Das Freiraumkonzept setzt auf klimaaktive Lösungen wie Schwammstadtprinzip, klimagerechte Bepflanzung und robuste Grünräume zur Verbesserung des Mikroklimas.

Eine zentrale Kontaktzone zwischen Wohnen und Gewerbe fördert Begegnung, kurze Wege und Nutzungsmischung. Mobility Hubs, ein weitgehend autofreier Innenbereich sowie ein dichtes Netz aus Fuß- und Radwegen stärken nachhaltige Mobilität. Mit ausgewogener Dichte, modularen Strukturen und ressourcenschonendem Bauen verbindet das Konzept ökologische Verantwortung mit ökonomischer Tragfähigkeit und verleiht Alt-Hohenschönhausen einen zukunftsorientierten Impuls.
