MetroLab Podcast

We are happy to announce the release of our latest project, the MetroLab Podcast!

In our Podcast we want to discuss different perspectives on the role of metropolitan regions in the climate crisis by entwining individual key topics that impact not only our daily life but are majorly contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.

In several episodes we will have discussions with researchers, activists, thinkers, policy makers and practitioners to better understand the role of metropolitan regions in the climate crisis and their paths towards climate neutrality.

Listen here or find it wherever you get your Podcasts!

GLARA – Green Living Augmented+virtual ReAlity

Just before the end of 2019 we launched a new project: GLARA – Green Living Augmented+virtual ReAlity is a research and development project that aims at integrating participation processes with new technologies making them more accessible for everyone. The focus is on planning of green infrastructures and a transparent, timely communication of their positive impacts on micro-climate and environment. An easy-to-use mobile application should complement face-to-face elements in participation processes in order to make it easier for people to participate. With the use of virtual and augmented reality, complex plans and maps can be translated to comprehensible pictures.

We are looking forward to working in this project with our partners from tatwort, green4cities and fluxguide.

Many thanks to BMDW who funds this projects through the FFG COIN Program.

PlaceCity Forum #1: Public Space and Urban Heat

On the 11th of November, the first Placemaking Forum “Public Space and Urban Heat” took place within the framework of our JPI Urban Europe project “PlaceCity Floridsdorf”. Two short films („The Flying Gardners“, Giacomo and Matteo Grimaldi and “When a Town Runs Dry”, Joris Debeij) were shown, in cooperation with Movies in Wonderland, followed by an open discussion with experts and the audience. Claudia Schrenk (MB-BD, competence center for green and environmental infrastructure), Jürgen Preiss (MA 22, Urban Heat Islands Strategy) and Doris Schnepf (Green4Cities, Tröpferlbad 2.0) therefore discussed the topic of urban heat and how to adopt our city to climate change on different scales. Methods of the city of Vienna that promote green and blue infrastructure were discussed and projects that have already been implemented were presented.

The next forum “Placemaking Pils” will take place on Wednesday, November 27th at 7 pm at the Creative Cluster / Projektraum Schlingermarkt. Placemakers and “enablers” from Vienna will present their projects at this forum. Afterwards, there will also be the opportunity to have a chat over a beer. Come and join us!

Book Launch: Urban Design Lab Handbook

Between 2013 and 2018, the Institute of Urban Design and Landscape Architecture (Städtebau Entwerfen) of the TU-Wien partnered with the Housing and Urban Development Division (HUD) of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to create a scientific foundation for innovative methods that foster participatory planning and design. An experimental design approach was applied, combining people- centered planning, participatory planning tools, urban strategies, and urban design. The Urban Design Lab (UDL) worked in over twenty emerging cities in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).

The “Urban Design Lab Handbook” displays the result of a five years planning process: not only 21 projects all over the American continent were developed, but also a solid planning methodology was elaborated. The handbook explains the context and emerging problems faced by the cities of Latin America and the Caribbean and puts forward various solutions for typical difficulties encountered within those urban conglomerations.

A field of experiments for innovative, urban ideas in development areas
