Wettbewerb Erzherzog Karl Straße Süd
Der städtebauliche Entwurf positioniert sich als hochwertiges Wohnquartier mit Mehrwert für die Bewohner*innen und deren Nachbar*innen aus den umliegenden Quartieren. Das urbane Patchwork zwischen den beiden U-Bahnstationen Aspernstraße und Donauspital wird durch die identitätsstiftende Typologie und Körnung des Städtebaus ein sinnvolles Ganzes. Das Quartierszentrum Wonka-Platz an der U-Bahnstation Aspernstraße wird durch einen Entree-Platz im Quartier verstärkt; es entsteht daher kein neues Zentrum, sondern eine Weiterentwicklung dieser Zentralität. Ein markanter Eingang ins Quartier entsteht. An den Rändern im Norden und Süden werden die bestehenden, urbanen Funktionen mit kommerziellen EG-Nutzungen verstärkt.
Die markante Höhensilhouette schafft Orientierung im Quartier, mit dichten, aber kleinteiligen Typologien an der Erzherzog-Karl-Straße sowie Langobardenstraße. Die grüne Mitte ist freigespielt für flexible Freiraumnutzungen. Hohe Gebäude am Park geben diesem einen Rahmen. Die Freiraumnutzung wird an diesen Stellen durch Grätzlplätze verstärkt, welche dem Quartier eine innere Logik und Orientierung geben. Die Baufeldteilung soll kleinteilig sein, je nach Größe mit 2-4 Bauplätzen, die vielfältig genutzt werden, z.B. als geförderter und nicht-geförderter Wohnbau, Baugruppen, Quartiershäuser mit einem hohen Anspruch an die Architektur und vielfältigen Nutzungen in den EG-Zonen.
Das Freiraumkonzept besteht aus 4 übergeordneten Achsen: der Langobardenstraße, der Erzherzog-Karl-Straße, der urbanen Achse entlang der U-Bahn und der landschaftlichen Verbindung der Eibengasse. Das neue Quartier gibt den beiden angrenzenden Straßenräumen ein neues Gesicht. Die urbane Achse verbindet die zwei großen Plätze an den U-Bahnstationen und sorgt für kurze Wege im Quartier. Der Park zeichnet sich durch eine weiträumige Parklandschaft zwischen den Quartieren, welche durch einen grünen Fuß- und Radweg miteinander verbunden werden, aus. Er verbindet verschiedene landschaftliche Räume und Sequenzen mit aktiven Feldern aus vielfältigen Nutzungsmöglichkeiten.
Die EG-Zone an der U-Bahntrasse ist „urban“ konzipiert, mit aktiver EG-Zonennutzung im angrenzenden, zweigeschossigen Sockel von min. GH=4 m. Zwei autofreie Nord-Süd orientierte Erschließungsstränge dienen der Aktivierung mit nachbarschaftsorientierten Nutzungen Durch flexible, kommerzielle und nicht-kommerzielle EG-Zonen wird ein attraktives Angebot an die Bewohner*innen gemacht, diese Räume aktiv mitzugestalten. Als Entwicklungsräume ausgewiesene Zonen werden durch Calls vergeben. Ein baufeldübergreifendes Entwicklungskonzept für z.B. Gemeinschaftsräume, Co-Working-Räume, Proberäume, Theater etc. ermöglicht die Schaffung eines attraktiven Angebots für die Bewohner*innen.

This urban design concept positions itself as a high-quality residential quarter with added value for its residents and those from the surrounding neighbourhoods. The urban patchwork between the two underground stations Aspernstraße and Donauspital becomes a coherent unit through the identity-creating typology and grain of the urban design. The existing neighbourhood centre Wonka-Platz next to the underground station Aspernstraße is strengthened by an additional square on the new development site. This supports the further development of the existing centrality, rather than creating a completely new centre. At the same time, this creates a prominent entrance to the new neighbourhood. At the edges to the north and south, the existing urban functions are supplemented with commercial ground floor uses.
The prominent silhouette of the building hights creates orientation in the neighbourhood, with dense but small-scale typologies next to Erzherzog-Karl-Straße and Langobardenstraße. The green centre is free for flexible use of the open space. Additionally, the tall buildings along the park give it a framework. At these spots, the use of open space is reinforced by urban squares, which provide the neighbourhood with an inner logic and orientation. The building sites are to be divided into small sections, depending on the size, with 2-4 building plots that can be used in a variety of ways, e.g. as subsidised or non-subsidised housing, building groups, neighbourhood houses with high architectural standards and a variety of uses in the ground floor zones.
The open space concept consists of 4 main axes: Langobardenstraße, Erzherzog-Karl-Straße, the urban axis along the underground and the landscape connection of Eibengasse. The new neighbourhood gives the two adjacent streetscapes a new face. The urban axis connects the two large squares at the underground stations and ensures short distances in the neighbourhood. The park is characterised by a spacious landscape between the quarters, which are additionally connected by a green pedestrian and cycle path. It connects various landscape spaces and sequences with active fields of diverse possible uses.
The ground floor zone along the underground line is designed “urban”, with active ground floor use in the adjacent two-storey base of min. 4 m. Two car-free north-south oriented access routes support the activation of neighbourhood-oriented uses. Flexible, commercial and non-commercial ground floor zones invite the residents to actively co-design these spaces. Areas designated as development zones will be allocated through calls. A development concept across the building sites (e.g. for community spaces, co-working spaces, rehearsal rooms, theatres, etc.) enables the implementation of attractive facilities for the residents.
