In the framework of the 100+ Villages program – an initiative of the Albanian Government – Superwien urbanism supported the National Territorial Planning Agency of Albania (AKPT) with knowledge about placemaking and techniques of civic engagement in urban planning. Superwien worked on a case study in the village of Kanina, that has a special identity and economic linkage to the city of Vlore. In two days of workshops on site, different tools were used, based on the Urban Design Lab and the concept of placemaking, in order to activate the local economic and cultural actors in the development of the village and create common strategies to trigger economic development and foster sustainable tourism.
The results of the workshops and focus interviews led to the definition of Emerging Topics and Development Goals. In a simple action plan, Superwien proposes the re-design of the main square, including the introduction of commercial and non-commercial zones, and the renovation of the historical stone buildings, with the goal to activate the square and make it more attractive for tourists as well as residents.
