Within the “Integrated Cultural Heritage Framework” the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development supports the Republic of Uzbekistan in fostering tourism and land use development of the Khorezm Region, paying particular attention to the city of Khiva. Khiva is a medium-size city in Uzbekistan with growing population and rising numbers of tourists arriving each year. The UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ichan Kala, is the historical city center which is still inhabited today. The need for improvement of infrastructures for the local population and the requirements of tourism development are two major influential factors in urban development. As the international consultant for land use planning, superwien has assessed the current state of spatial development of the region and the city. Applying dialogue-oriented planning methods, development vision and strategies as well as priority key projects have been elaborated. The final report presents recommendations for the next steps towards a prosperous and balanced development of Khorezm and Khiva.

Khiva – Stadtentwicklung und Regionalplanung in Khiva und Khorezm
Im Rahmen des „Integrated Cultural Heritage Framework“ unterstützt die Europäische Bank für Wiederaufbau und Entwicklung die Republik Usbekistan bei der Förderung des Tourismus und der Raumplanung in der Region Khorezm. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf der mittelgroßen Stadt Khiva, die jährlich mit mäßigem Bevölkerungswachstum, aber rasant zunehmenden Besucherzahlen konfrontiert ist.  Ihr historisches Stadtzentrum, Ichan Kala, ist UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe. Die Notwendigkeit zur Verbesserung der Infrastruktur für die lokale Bevölkerung und die Herausforderungen der Tourismusentwicklung sind wesentliche Einflussfaktoren für die Stadtentwicklung. Als internationaler Consultant für Stadt- und Regionalentwicklung hat superwien den aktuellen Stand der räumlichen Entwicklung in Khorezm und Khiva untersucht. Unter Anwendung partizipativer Planungsmethoden, wurden Entwicklungsvisionen und -strategien sowie ausgewählte Schlüsselprojekte erarbeitet. Der Abschlussbericht enthält konkrete Empfehlungen für die nachhaltige Entwicklung von Khorezm und Khiva.
